Revelations: The Evolution of Modern and Contemporary Indian Art
Sunderlande is delighted to present the current exhibition, featuring iconic works by Jamini Roy, M. F. Husain, F. N. Souza, Krishen Khanna, Anjolie Ela Menon, Sanjay Bhattacharya, Prabhakar Barwe, and others. The exhibition follows the remarkable birth and incredibly diverse path of 20th Century South Asian art from its beginnings with Jamini Roy and the Bengal School, to the golden age of the post-Independence Modernists, and on through the critical experimentations of India’s second generation of modern painters. The works on view trace the passing of the Modernist baton (often back and forth) through the course of three generations, as they inspired and influenced one another to achieve constantly evolving new heights of experimentation and creativity. But special attention is drawn to those first and second generation Modern Masters who may have been underappreciated during their lifetime, or historically overlooked until a very recent new wave of scholarly exploration and intensifying critical interest which promises a long overdue rethinking of the traditional cannon of South Asian Modern art.
